K-WaterGuard AI Agent Overview

K-WaterGuard AI is an autonomous water-quality intelligence dashboard for South Korea. It combines Korean monitoring data, historical station records, spatial maps, alert screening rules, trend analysis, and researcher-ready downloads into one decision-support system.

The agent supports farmers, watershed managers, lake and reservoir operators, researchers, extension officers, policy experts, and environmental agencies by turning raw water-quality records into practical signals for irrigation safety, nutrient pressure, algal-bloom risk, pollution screening, and long-term watershed planning.

The dashboard is organized as an applied AI agent: WQ Evidence & Trends combines corrected station maps, latest status, Mann-Kendall trend statistics, and Sen slope evidence; Algal Bloom Status screens harmful cyanobacteria for national watersheds and Namgang Dam; Hydrometeorological Risk links rainfall, heat, wind, humidity, and ET0 with water-quality pressure; Agrometeorology Prediction evaluates greenhouse, water-curtain cultivation, drought, runoff, and climate-impact sensitivity; Contact & Downloads provides collaboration details and research datasets; and Ask AI helps visitors interpret the live pages.

  • Farmers can review water-quality status before irrigation planning and understand nutrient or algal risk around nearby watersheds.
  • Researchers can download historical station datasets and inspect Mann-Kendall and Sen's slope trend outputs.

This dashboard is prepared as a Progressive Web App. After installation, it opens from the phone or tablet home screen, keeps the app navigation, caches the dashboard shell, and feels closer to a regular mobile application.

The K-WaterGuard AgroClimate Prediction Model is a transparent hybrid screening model that combines basin-scale daily meteorology, recent water-quality nutrient pressure, cyanobacteria context, evapotranspiration demand, heat-stress thresholds, and scenario sensitivity rules. The purpose is not to replace official agricultural or meteorological forecasts, but to convert the daily water-environment archive into an interpretable early-warning layer for irrigation reliability, drought tendency, runoff-driven contamination risk, bloom-agriculture coupling, and climate-change stress screening.

Agriculture Water Stress

The agriculture-water-stress score ranks each basin using the number of dry days in the latest 14-day window, reference evapotranspiration, maximum temperature, and crop heat-stress exposure. Higher scores indicate basins where irrigation demand may rise faster than natural rainfall replenishment, especially when warm conditions increase ET0 and reduce soil-water persistence. This layer is useful for farmers, watershed managers, and extension experts who need a basin-scale view of potential crop water stress before field-level decisions are made.

Drought And Extreme Events

The model separates two different hazards that are often mixed together: hot-dry drought pressure and rainfall-runoff extreme-event pressure. Drought pressure is derived from dry-day frequency, ET0, and heat load; runoff pressure is derived from 14-day accumulated rainfall and wind-related storm intensity. Showing both dimensions allows managers to distinguish basins that need irrigation planning from basins where sudden runoff, sediment transport, nutrient flushing, or post-storm water-quality deterioration may be more important.

Future Impact Lens

The future-impact lens applies two transparent sensitivity experiments: a +2 deg C hot-dry stress scenario and an extreme-rainfall amplification scenario. These are not deterministic climate forecasts; they are screening perturbations that show how the current basin condition may respond if near-term climate stress intensifies. The results help identify basins where small increases in heat, dry spells, or rainfall intensity could shift agricultural water reliability, cyanobacteria risk, and runoff-driven pollutant delivery.

Water-curtain cultivation is especially sensitive because winter greenhouse heating depends on continuous water circulation and dependable groundwater or surface-water supply. A prolonged dry period can lower recharge and increase competition between irrigation, greenhouse heating, and ecological flow needs. Warmer winters may reduce heating demand in some periods, but unstable recharge, groundwater temperature changes, and nutrient or microbial contamination can still increase management risk for water-curtain systems.

South Korea Vegetation Condition Index And Agricultural Drought Analysis

This live agrometeorology layer evaluates agricultural drought and vegetation stress across South Korea using the Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) concept. The workflow is designed to accept satellite-based NDVI products from Google Earth Engine, MODIS, Sentinel, Landsat, or local CSV exports when they are available. In each daily agent run, the dashboard also creates an operational national VCI screening grid from the live K-WaterGuard basin meteorology, drought, heat, evapotranspiration, runoff, water-quality, and bloom-risk drivers so that the Agrometeorology page remains complete for all Korean watersheds.

VCI compares current vegetation condition with the historical minimum and maximum NDVI range at each location. This is more informative than a simple NDVI map because naturally low-vegetation areas are evaluated against their own historical behavior rather than against a national average. For South Korea, this is important because protected agriculture, greenhouse horticulture, paddy fields, upland crops, mountainous watersheds, reservoir-irrigated areas, and water-curtain cultivation zones respond differently to heat, rainfall deficits, groundwater recharge, and water-quality stress.

VCI = 100 x (NDVI_current - NDVI_min) / (NDVI_max - NDVI_min). The dashboard uses the 0-100 interpretation scale, where low values indicate vegetation stress or agricultural drought and high values indicate normal to very good vegetation condition.

The satellite-ready workflow builds a historical annual NDVI baseline, estimates pixel-wise NDVI minimum and maximum conditions, calculates the current-year NDVI layer, converts it to VCI, clips the analysis to the South Korea boundary, and publishes clickable national maps for farm and watershed interpretation.
